HUNTING ETIQUETTE
The following suggestions will
help those not familiar with hunting to better understand the
etiquette of the sport.
*Visitors and Guests are welcomed by
the Club at all runs. There is a small social 'cap' which permits
visitors to participate in STIRRUP CUP and AFTERNOON TEA at the
HUNT. Where a member has guests at a Hunt it is their responsibility
to pay the cap to membership officer.
*Upon arrival it
is customary to greet the Master and introduce any guest with you.
Male riders are
encouraged to remove their cap when being addressed by the Master,
when mounted, if safe to do so.
*Members seeking
qualifications must notify the Master before the hunt starts and if
he is satisfied with the horse and rider's performance will sign
their card at the conclusion of the Hunt.
*Do not impede
others while traversing a jump.
*Correct adult
hunting attire is: A black cap, pink coat with charcoal collar,
white breeches, white shirt and stock and black boots with tan tops.
However, a hacking jacket with fawn or white jodhpurs is
permissible. Riders are only permitted to wear a "pink" (coat for
males and collar on black jacket for females) at the invitation of
the Master and should then do so at all hunts thereafter (except
Preliminary Runs and Informal Days).
*Members MUST wear the ASA approved riding hats which are now
available in Traditional Hunting style and colour.
*Always turn
yourself and your horse out as well as you are able to afford, as a
compliment to the Club, Master and Landowners. If dress standard is
insufficient the Master will order the person to retire.
*Please be on
time for hunts. If however you do arrive late, travel along the
roadside until you meet the Master and then request permission from
him or the Field Master to join the field. Similarly if you wish to
retire from the Hunt, seek permission from either of them to do so.
Never dismount prior to the Master or without seeking the Master's
permission. After Stirrup Cup, do not remount before the Master.
*Always stay 20
metres behind the Field Master. Adhere strictly to any instructions
that the Master or Field Master may give. Never take a jump that the
Master hasn't, unless he or the Field Master has given the field
permission to do so.
*If you happen to
be riding a horse that kicks, keep it out of the way of people,
horses and riders and tie a red ribbon on it's tail. Please keep
both green and kicking horses towards the rear of the field.
*Do not smoke
while mounted. Attend to your horse before proceeding to stirrup
cup or afternoon tea. Do not begin afternoon tea prior to the
Master.
*At the
conclusion of the Hunt, riders must assemble mounted, to be formally
dismissed by the Master. Riders should then join in wishing The
Master, "Good Evening". Also, if you have enjoyed the Hunt, tell the
Convener and Landholders present as an expression of thanks and
appreciation.
*Do not leave the
Hunt venue until the Toast to the Landholder(s) has been concluded.
